Lowell, Arizona, sat in the Mule Mountains of Cochise County in 1909, a copper-mining settlement that shared its economy and its fortunes with neighboring Bisbee. Arizona was still a territory, with statehood still three years off, and the mines and smelting works in the district drove both the local payroll and the regional railroad traffic that carried ore and supplies. Miners and their families lived in a hillside community shaped by the steep terrain, where housing, schools, and churches climbed the slopes above the workings. Like other camps in the Warren district, Lowell depended on the health of copper prices and on the company decisions made far away in the East, so residents measured their year by shift schedules and production reports. A panoramic view of the town would have shown people who knew it as a working copper camp first and a town second.
