Gleeson, in the mountains of southeastern Arizona Territory, was a mining camp in 1909, a few years before Arizona became a state in 1912. Its residents lived by copper, lead, and zinc taken from the hills around the town, and their fortunes rose and fell with ore prices and the claims that were being worked at the time. The camp was one of many small mining communities in the region, which drew much of its commerce and news from larger copper centers such as Bisbee. Life in such places centered on the mine shafts, the company offices, and the few stores and saloons that served the miners and their families, with the dry, open country around them shaping daily routines.
