Grand Canyon, Arizona, in 1909 was a place that visitors reached mainly by train. The Santa Fe Railway's branch line from Williams had carried tourists to the South Rim since 1901, and the El Tovar Hotel, opened on the rim in 1905 and run by the Fred Harvey Company, gave travelers a comfortable base for seeing the canyon. Arizona was still a territory, not yet a state, and the canyon had been protected as a national monument only in 1908 under President Theodore Roosevelt. Local life centered on tourism, with guides, mule trains, and hotel workers serving people who came to see the canyon's rock layers and the trails that dropped toward the Colorado River.
