In 1909, Douglas, Arizona, was a smelter town whose furnaces processed copper ore hauled in from the mines at Bisbee, about twenty miles to the west. Phelps Dodge's works employed a large share of the town's men, and their shifts set the rhythm of daily life, from the early whistles to the trains that carried bullion out. Many residents had come from elsewhere in Arizona, from northern Mexico, and from the eastern states, so church services, fraternal lodges, and union meetings were often conducted in more than one language. Because the town lay at the border, people followed news of unrest in Mexico closely, and the political ffortunes of Porfirio Díaz's government were discussed as openly on Douglas street corners as the price of copper.
