Courtland, Arizona, was a copper mining town in Cochise County in 1909, when Arizona was still a territory and would not become a state until 1912. Its economy rested on the copper ore pulled from the surrounding hills, and like the nearby mining camps around Bisbee, it depended on the smelting and shipping that tied the district to the railroads and to distant eastern and European markets. The Panic of 1907 had recently tightened credit and slowed hiring across the copper industry, so residents in 1909 were still watching company payrolls and metal prices closely. Most of the people who lived there worked underground or in the mills, and the town's identity came from that labor, from the company shifts, and from the frontier mix of miners, merchants, and families who had come west to find work.
