Bisbee, Arizona, in 1909 was a copper mining town tucked into the canyons of the Mule Mountains in Cochise County, and it owed its existence to the Copper Queen mine and the company that ran it. Arizona was still a territory that year, and statehood was still a few years away. Miners arrived from many places, including Cornwall, which is why many locals called Cornish workers "Cousin Jacks," and Mexican and other immigrant laborers worked alongside them underground. Houses and business blocks clung to the steep slopes, with stairways and narrow streets linking the upper and lower parts of town. Residents would have known Bisbee first as a place where copper was pulled from the ground and shipped out by rail, and the town's fortunes rose and fell with the price of the metal.
