Bisbee, Arizona, in 1916 was a state town, having joined the Union as part of Arizona in 1912, and its economy still ran on copper from the Copper Queen and neighboring properties in the Warren mining district. European wars had driven up demand for the metal, so the mines and the smelter at Douglas were working hard, and the town's payroll drew men from Mexico, southern and eastern Europe, and Cornwall. In March of that year, Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, sent alarm across the border country, and soldiers and national guardsmen were posted in the region. Residents would have measured their year by ore prices, shift whistles, and the news arriving by wire about the fighting to the south.
