Oatman, Arizona, in Mohave County, was a gold camp in the Black Mountains in 1916, when mining drove nearly everything in town. Prospectors had come into the district after the early 1900s strikes, and the mines around town kept men working underground in shifts while stamp mills and assay offices lined the streets. The town took its name from Olive Oatman, a young settler whose captivity by Yavapai people and later rescue in the 1850s had been retold across the country for decades. Residents in 1916 knew Oatman as a rough, busy mining town where the fortunes of the local mines rose and fell with the price and output of gold.
