Tempe Normal School sat on the edge of the town of Tempe in the Salt River Valley of Arizona Territory in 1908, nearly four years before statehood. The school trained teachers for the territory's growing number of classrooms, many of them in farm towns and mining camps, and it drew students from across the region. Around it, the valley's economy rested on irrigated fields of alfalfa, cotton, and citrus, watered by canals that carried Salt River water to farms in the desert. Phoenix, a few miles north, was the territorial center of commerce and government, and Tempe's residents often thought of the school as the valley's main source of educated teachers. The campus view captured a young institution still building its reputation as the territory's teacher training center.
