Tempe, Arizona, in 1908 was a small farming town in the Salt River Valley, still two years away from statehood, when Arizona was a territory. It had grown up around Hayden's Ferry, the crossing on the Salt River that Charles Trumbull Hayden established, and its Hayden flour mill drew on the valley's wheat and grain. Irrigation was the town's lifeline, since canals fed by the Salt River carried water to alfalfa, cotton, citrus, and grain fields, and the federal Roosevelt Dam was then under construction upstream to make that supply more dependable. The Territorial Normal School, opened in 1885 to train teachers, gave the town a civic identity beyond farming, and residents would have known Tempe as a farm town with a teachers' college on its edge.
