In 1908, the Petrified Forest in northeastern Arizona Territory was a stretch of badlands where logs of stone lay scattered across the high desert, and it drew visitors who came by the Atlantic and Pacific line of the Santa Fe Railway, which ran through nearby stations such as Adamana. Many people carried off chunks of petrified wood as souvenirs, and local dealers sold polished pieces to tourists, a trade that threatened the site's fossil resources. Congress had set the area aside as a national monument in December 1906, two years before this view was taken, and the protection was still new and contested. Arizona would not become a state until 1912, so residents of the territory were still debating how its public lands and natural wonders would be managed.
