Mesa, Arizona, in 1908 was a farming town of several thousand people, and this view captures it in the years when cotton was becoming one of the valley's most valuable crops. Long-staple cotton planted along the irrigated fields around town brought buyers and gins into the local economy, while the territory's larger money came from copper mines far to the north and east. Phoenix, the territorial capital since 1889, was only a short trip away, and residents of Mesa followed territorial politics there with interest. Life in the town revolved around church meetinghouses, district schools, and the steady work of keeping ditches clear and fields watered through the growing season.
