Kelvin, Arizona, in 1908 was a small smelter and railroad town on the Gila River in Pinal County, built to process copper ore hauled from the mining district to the north and east. Arizona was still a territory then, two years from statehood in 1912, and copper was the economic engine that drew workers, merchants, and railroad crews to places like this. Life revolved around the smelter's shifts, the rail line that carried ore and supplies, and the river that supplied water for the works and the surrounding fields. For the people living there, Kelvin meant steady wages from copper, a company-shaped community, and the hard, dusty routines of a desert mining outpost.
