Mesa, Arizona, in 1908 was a small farming town in the Salt River Valley, a few miles east of Phoenix, where irrigation canals fed by the Salt River turned desert land into fields of alfalfa, cotton, citrus, and grain. The Mormon settlers who founded Mesa in 1878 had built much of the early canal system, and by the time of this view the town was known as a center of agriculture and a quiet community of churches, schools, and family farms. Arizona had become a state only four years earlier, in 1912 it had not yet happened, so 1908 still found it a territory, with statehood debates shaping local politics. The Arizona Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was a later landmark, not yet built, while the railroad connections that would boost shipping were still developing.
