Beetfield, Arizona, in 1912 was a farm district in a territory that had only just become a state. Arizona achieved statehood on February 14, 1912, ending decades as a territory, and its economy still rested largely on copper mining in the mountain districts and on irrigated farming in the valleys. Sugar beets were one of the crops that irrigated fields could support, and a field of beets like this one would have been a sign of the water projects that made desert land productive. Residents of the region were used to railroads hauling ore and crops out, and many of them were newcomers who had arrived in the previous two decades hoping that statehood and irrigation would bring steady growth.
