Beardsley, Arizona, in 1908 was a small irrigation colony on the desert northwest of Phoenix, one of several townsites promoted to eastern buyers who wanted farms in the Salt River Valley. Arizona was still a territory, not yet a state, and its economy depended on water: canals carried river water onto cotton, alfalfa, grain and fruit land, and the valley's leaders were pressing for the large federal reservoir that would become Roosevelt Dam, then under construction upstream. Settlers in a place like Beardsley measured their prospects by canal deliveries and rail connections to market, and by whether a new town could hold its population through dry years. Few records from this townsite survive in detail, so its story is best read against that broader valley effort to turn desert into farmland.
