Fish Creek, Arizona, was a small community in 1909, when the territory was still years away from statehood, which came in 1912. Its residents lived in a region shaped by mining, cattle ranching, and the slow spread of irrigation, while the larger territory's economy leaned on copper camps such as Bisbee, Jerome, and Clifton. Across the territory, the federal government's Roosevelt Dam was under construction on the Salt River, and many Arizonans followed its progress as the promise of reliable water for farms and towns. Remote settlements like Fish Creek depended on freight wagons, mail routes, and trade with the nearest railroad towns, since rail lines reached only a few corners of the territory. Little is documented about daily life at this particular spot, so the decade is best understood through the territory's wider struggles over distance, water, and resources.
