Metcalf, in Greenlee County in eastern Arizona, was a copper camp in 1909, when Arizona was still a territory and had not yet reached statehood in 1912. The town sat within the Clifton-Morenci mining district, where copper operations drew wage workers from Mexico, Europe, and the eastern United States, and ore moved to smelting works in the Clifton area. Railroad lines carried ore and metal out of the mountain canyons and tied the district to national copper markets, whose prices rose and fell with demand from manufacturers and electrical industries. Daily life in such camps centered on the company, its boarding houses, stores, and schools, and on the constant rhythm of shifts underground and at the surface works.
