Ray and Hercules were mining camps in the copper country of Pinal County, Arizona Territory, in 1909, a few years before statehood in 1912. Copper was the territory's leading industry, and the region drew miners, smeltermen, and railroad crews from across the Southwest and from Mexico and Europe. Ore from the Ray workings moved by rail toward the smelting works on the Southern Pacific line, which tied the district's output to national markets and made the boom towns depend on the price of copper. Mining camps like these were rough places, built around company housing, boarding houses, and saloons, with families living alongside the shift whistles and the constant noise of hoists and ore cars. A panoramic view of the workings would have shown residents the scale of the ground being turned over, and it recorded a moment when Arizona's future was being shaped largely by what came out of the hills.
