Tombstone, Arizona, in 1909 was a mining town past its silver peak. The Tombstone Consolidated mines had flooded in the 1880s, and by the early twentieth century the population had shrunk far from the boom years when it counted several thousand residents. Mining continued on a smaller scale, and the town's identity increasingly rested on its frontier past, including the 1881 gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Cattle ranching and copper development in southeastern Arizona kept nearby commerce moving, while the territory itself was still a few years from statehood in 1912.
