Tucson in 1909 was a dusty town in Arizona Territory, still three years from statehood in 1912. The Southern Pacific railroad had reached it in 1880, linking its merchants to California and to the copper camps of southeastern Arizona. Many residents also knew the town as a destination for health seekers, drawn by its dry air and abundant sunshine. The University of Arizona, chartered in 1885, held classes on a campus at the edge of the city, while Mexican-American and Anglo families shared its streets, markets, and churches.
