Pliny Earle is identified in this portrait through Sanborn's biography of him, and his name is scratched by hand on the face of the plate. The half plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1860, when the daguerreotype was the leading portrait process. Earle, born in 1809, was a physician who worked in the care of people with mental illness and was also an active antislavery voice with Quaker roots. The gold toning visible in the image was a common step that deepened the tones and helped protect the delicate silver surface.
