Numbered 464 in its series, this stereograph shows a camp set among the forest trees of Yellowstone. It belongs to a set titled *Scenery of the Yellowstone 1871*, issued the year before Congress made the area the first national park in 1872. Stereo cards were viewed through a special lens to create a sense of depth, and they were among the most common ways Americans of the day saw distant landscapes. The card later passed to collector Marian S. Carson and is indexed under the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.
