The rapids above the Falls of the Yellowstone show the river churning over rock before it drops into the canyon, a stretch of water that is easy to overlook beside the falls themselves. William Henry Jackson made this stereograph in 1871 as part of the series *Scenery of the Yellowstone*, working with the Hayden Geological Survey. Its paired images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, giving a sense of depth to a landscape few Americans had seen firsthand. Jackson's 1871 photographs helped persuade Congress to set the region aside as Yellowstone National Park the following year.
