This view looks upstream along the Yellowstone River above its falls, in the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. William Henry Jackson, who had photographed the park with the Hayden Survey in 1871, made many views of its rivers and canyons, and this one is listed in the 1898 catalog of his work. The print is an albumen photograph mounted on board, made about 1892 and later issued through the Detroit Publishing Company. Jackson's pictures helped persuade the public and Congress that Yellowstone was worth protecting, which is why scenes like this one came to stand for the park's early reputation.
