Rapids above the Falls of the Yellowstone is a stereograph of white water racing toward the drop, a view of the river's upper course rather than the falls themselves. William Henry Jackson made it in 1871 during the Hayden Geological Survey's expedition, and it was issued in Washington as part of the Scenery of the Yellowstone series. Stereo cards like this were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave armchair travelers a sense of depth in a region few Americans had seen. The survey's images helped persuade Congress to set Yellowstone aside as the first national park in 1872.
