Upper Falls of the Yellowstone, which the card's title gives as 115 feet, appears here as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical images meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. William Henry Jackson made the view in 1871 while working with the Hayden Geological Survey, whose expedition that summer documented the region's canyons, falls and geysers. Jackson's photographs from the survey were widely circulated in the East and helped inform the debate that led Congress to set aside the Yellowstone area as the first national park in 1872. This card is No. 442 in the series *Scenery of the Yellowstone*.
