Upper Falls of the Yellowstone, which drops 115 feet, appears here as a stereo card, a pair of nearly identical photographs that a stereoscope merged into a single view with depth. William Henry Jackson made the image in 1871 for his Scenery of the Yellowstone series, published in Washington, D.C., and numbered 442 in the set. Jackson was working with the Hayden Geological Survey that summer, and his photographs of the region are often credited with helping persuade Congress to set Yellowstone aside as the first national park in 1872. Albumen cards like this one were sold widely to parlor viewers, who could look at distant landscapes as if they stood before them.
