Among the 1871 Yellowstone views, this stereo card stands out for its subject: a geyser that had stopped erupting, photographed along the East Fork of the Yellowstone River. The card is numbered 465 and was published by William I. Marshall as part of his series of Yellowstone scenes from that year. Those views grew out of the 1871 survey of the region led by Ferdinand V. Hayden, which helped bring Yellowstone's wonders to a wider public. A dead geyser also served as a reminder that the thermal landscape was always changing. Seen through a stereoscope, the paired images give the rock and terrain a depth that a flat print cannot.
