Riverside Geyser stands on the bank of the Firehole River in the Upper Geyser Basin, and its name comes from that riverside setting. Unlike the upright plumes of many Yellowstone geysers, it throws a slanting jet of hot water across the river, which makes it one of the basin's more unusual sights. The basin's geysers, hot springs, and boardwalks drew tourists soon after Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and Riverside became a regular stop for visitors. The photograph is credited to Jackson Hayden Moran, and it shows the geyser as early park visitors would have seen it.
