Both Giant Geyser and Old Faithful lie in the Upper Geyser Basin, and this view places the two named features together in one scene. Giant is among the largest geysers on Earth, and when it erupts its column can rise well over 100 feet and last for a long stretch, though its timing is far less predictable than Old Faithful's. The Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition named Old Faithful in 1870, and the region's geysers helped draw attention that led to Yellowstone's designation as the first national park in 1872.
