Palms are the detail that sets this view apart, tying the scene to the Holy Week observances of New Orleans's Catholic community. The photograph was made around 1910 in front of St. Louis Cathedral, the church that faces Jackson Square at the heart of the old French Quarter. It is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American towns and landmarks in the early twentieth century, and its 8 by 10 inch size gave the photographer fine detail for large prints.
