Alexander Gardner sits beside his wagon on a hill above Fort Riley, Kansas, a spot the caption places 420 miles west of St. Louis. The wagon is a portable darkroom, the kind wet-plate photographers hauled across the field so they could coat, expose and develop plates on site. Gardner, best known for his Civil War battlefield photographs, made this stereograph in 1867 as part of a series documenting the Union Pacific Railway's Eastern Division, then building west across Kansas. The card shows the photographer's equipment as much as the landscape, which makes it a record of how the work was done.
