Cattle graze in the foreground of this 1867 stereograph of Massachusetts Street in Lawrence, Kansas, while the original title places the town 323 miles west of St. Louis. Lawrence was founded in 1854 by antislavery settlers backed by New England emigrant aid societies, and the main street takes its name from that Massachusetts connection. Raiders led by William Quantrill burned much of the town in 1863, so this view of the rebuilt street a few years later shows a community in recovery. The card, numbered 43, belongs to a series issued along the Union Pacific Eastern Division railway.
