Fifth Street in Leavenworth, Kansas, sits about 309 miles west of St. Louis, according to this stereo card's title. Leavenworth was one of the earliest towns on the Missouri River in Kansas Territory, and it grew as a supply point for steamboats, freight wagons, and the nearby Fort Leavenworth. Washington photographers Gardner's Photographic Art Gallery issued this view in 1867 as card No. 52 in a series documenting the route of the Union Pacific Railway's Eastern Division. Stereo views like this were meant to be seen through a viewer, giving the street a sense of depth.
