Few places on the plains were as tied to the cattle trade as the stockyard at Abilene, Kansas, which this card places 447 miles west of St. Louis. Joseph McCoy's yards opened there in 1867 after the railroad reached the town, giving Texas drovers a railhead for shipping herds east. This stereograph shows a drover's cottage at the yard, a modest dwelling for the men who moved cattle to market. Issued by Gardner's Photographic Art Gallery in Washington in 1867, the card belongs to a series promoting the Union Pacific Railway's Eastern Division, and viewed through a stereoscope, its two nearly identical views create a sense of depth.
