Its title playfully calls a prairie dog colony near Abilene, Kansas, a town with a mayor, which sets it apart from the more typical railway views in this series. Gardner's Photographic Art Gallery issued the stereograph in Washington in 1867, and it is numbered 117 in the series *Across the continent on the Union Pacific Railway, Eastern Division*. The caption measures Abilene's distance as 447 miles west of St. Louis, a reminder that the river city was a common starting point for travelers and freight bound for the plains. Stereographs like this were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which made the flat plains appear to stretch into depth.
