Fifth Street in Leavenworth, Kansas, is the subject, and the title places the town by distance from St. Louis, a habit of stereograph captions that helped viewers follow a westward journey. Leavenworth was founded in 1854 and grew as a steamboat landing on the Missouri River, a supply point for overland travel and for settlers moving into the territory. The card is number 52 in a series on the Union Pacific Railway's Eastern Division, issued in 1867 by Gardner's Photographic Art Gallery in Washington, so it was meant to be seen as one stop on a tour across the country.
