The office shown here sat in Wyandotte, Kansas, a Missouri River town that stood at the edge of the frontier in 1867. Its caption measures the site as 286 miles west of St. Louis, which ties the building to the railroad's route as it pushed west across Kansas. Stereo cards like this one were sold to the public as a way to see the expanding country, so the view doubles as a record of how the railroad presented itself to eastern audiences. The building itself is plain and functional, typical of the company's early field offices, and it is worth noticing for that reason: it marks a working railroad headquarters rather than a grand station.
