A seated half-length portrait of Mary Kean, her head tilted toward her right shoulder, gives this print a quiet, intimate pose. It was made by Gerhard Sisters, a St. Louis studio, around 1915, and the record notes that it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which required a print for deposit. Studio portraits of the 1910s often used posed chairs and plain backdrops, so the viewer's attention falls on the sitter's expression and the angle of the head. The print also offers a glimpse of commercial portrait work in St. Louis during the decade before the First World War.
