This portrait shows journalist Marquis Childs, a St. Louis newspaperman who later became one of the best-known Washington columnists of his era. Childs grew up in Iowa, worked for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and went on to write a syndicated column on national politics that reached readers across the country. The photograph was made by Harris & Ewing, the Washington, D.C., studio that produced portraits of officials, journalists and other public figures for decades. Its large negative collection is now held by the Library of Congress, which makes the studio's work a useful source for the period.
