Eero Saarinen is shown here beside a scale model of the Gateway Arch, the stainless steel monument he designed for the St. Louis riverfront. The picture comes from a Look magazine assignment; the record notes it entered the magazine's library on May 27, 1958, and it survives as a contact sheet frame by photographer Michael A. Vaccaro. Saarinen won the national competition for the memorial in 1948, and the arch was not completed until 1965, so the model captures the design during the long years between concept and construction. Look's coverage of such projects helped bring modern architecture to a broad American audience at the time.
