Few views of 1850s St. Louis combine a bird's-eye panorama with a printed text panel quite like this one, which was lithographed by A. Janicke & Co. and issued by Hagen & Pfau at the *Anzeiger des Westens*, a German-language newspaper in the city. The riverfront and its steamboats are the focus, reflecting how central Mississippi River trade was to the city's growth before the Civil War. The newspaper's German-language publishing ties also point to the large German immigrant community that shaped St. Louis at the time. Because the print was made for promotion and public interest, it shows the city as its boosters wanted it seen.
