Going aboard the ocean liner St. Louis to greet Li Hung-chang sets this view apart from the board's other street and harbor scenes, since it shows a formal welcome on a ship's deck rather than the city itself. Li (1823-1901) was a senior Qing dynasty statesman who negotiated with Western powers and toured Europe and the United States in the mid-1890s, when such visits drew large crowds and heavy press coverage. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its travel photography, made this glass negative, which was catalogued with the date "1896?" and later donated to the State Historical Society of Colorado. The question mark signals that the exact date is uncertain.
