The viewpoint hangs above the Mississippi, where steamboats crowd the St. Louis levee in a sweeping bird's-eye panorama. Parsons & Atwater drew the scene on stone, and Currier & Ives published it in New York around 1874, when the firm was issuing many city views for a public eager to see American towns from above. St. Louis was then one of the busiest river ports in the country, and its growth depended heavily on river commerce, so the boats and wharves are the real subject here. The riverfront rewards a close look.
