The engraving shows the *New Era*, a gunboat built at St. Louis, drawn from sketches by a correspondent and published in *Harper's Weekly* on October 12, 1861, on page 646. In 1861 the Union was racing to build a river fleet to control the Mississippi and its tributaries, and St. Louis, with its riverfront shipyards and foundries, became one of the main places where those vessels were fitted out. Pictures like this one gave readers at home their first look at the warships that the war effort depended on.
