Unlike many of the street-trade pictures in this group, which show young boys, this one is titled "An old time newsboy," suggesting an older vendor who had worked the street corners for years. Lewis Hine made it in St. Louis, Missouri, in May 1910, while documenting child labor for the National Child Labor Committee. The caption card supplied the title, and the print is attributed to Hine on the basis of its provenance, as it appears in an album of street-trade photographs. Newsboys who sold papers on busy downtown corners were a common sight in American cities of the period, and Hine's pictures of them recorded the working conditions of urban street life.
