A boy seen from behind, cap on his head, faces a theater front advertising 25 cent matinees every day, and the caption card gives the picture its blunt title, "Where the boys spend their money." The photograph is attributed to Lewis Hine on the basis of its provenance and dates to May 1910, when Hine was documenting working children in cities for the National Child Labor Committee. Movie houses were then a new and inexpensive entertainment, and reformers worried about how young workers spent their small wages and free afternoons. The picture turns that concern into a study of one boy standing at the edge of the amusement being sold to him.
