A Turkish Room at the Southern Hotel anchors this view, which the catalog places in St. Louis, though the city and details are marked as unverified. Turkish rooms were a popular feature of late nineteenth-century American hotels and homes, where heavy draperies, rugs, and low seating created an exotic retreat apart from ordinary parlors. Here that Oriental flavor sits alongside Renaissance Revival side furniture and Victorian upholstery, with carpets draped over tables and chairs. The print was made by Rösch, a St. Louis photographer, and is dated to about 1895.
