Few stereographs of the period capture a hotel dining room as plainly as this one, which shows the Planters Hotel in St. Louis. The card was issued by the Keystone View Company, the Meadville, Pennsylvania firm that became one of the largest publishers of stereoviews in the United States, and its copyright is credited to B.L. Singley. Viewed through a stereoscope, cards like this gave parlor audiences a sense of depth in everyday interiors, and this one shows how a late nineteenth-century hotel dining room was furnished and arranged for guests. The date of c1897 comes from an older caption and has not been verified.
